just thinking about how the description 'Third' is used generally and its not always good! Third class, third person even third place in the sense of not winning or coming second. The challenge is for people who run these Third places is for a customer to move from being served as a stranger to being served with your name that they remember. If they're successful, they'll be a lot of names to learn... I guess these days especially in town centres, the issue is the cost of running the place in the first place and whether its viable having folks spend all morning using the wifi and not buying more than a cup of coffee. I watched a video recently about UK Teddy Boy culture in the 50's and them ending up in village or Church halls as Third Places because of their perceived reputation for violence. It worked because there was no entry requirement and no pressure to buy anything at all, the kids were all poor but had this great connection over clothes and music and just needed that place to share their lives, get dated or mix with the like minded . Bit like club culture from the 70's to the 90's that is fast disappearing because of the cost of running the venues.
