Karen, I've had an instagram account for several years https://www.instagram.com/beechtreegraffiti?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== It turns out Beech trees are one of the few trees that attract people to carve their names on often in Lovers Lanes. I'm thinking seriously about the Lovers lane idea and maybe trying to get a book done about it, as it also turns out that Beech trees attract the love struck! Let me know if you've found anything similar on walks in woods around you and if so maybe collaborate on a book?
here in the UK they are usually found in reasonably remote places but with good access via footpaths. Ideally no prying eyes :) I've found most at reachable level but one or two ( Loch Lomond and Dartington) way up the tree and must have formed some dare to even attempt the climb. Of course the heart with an arrow is a give away but others like I LOVE YOU POSSUM straight out a statement of fact. See how you get on x
Thank you for this lovely story, and all the insights and references. And I love seeing the photo from Beartown State Forest. I just camped there for the first time last week, what a gorgeous place. And great for tent campers.
Received this news too late to include in the letter, but it belongs here:
Please join the Great Barrington Tree Committee in welcoming a few special new members to our lovely community.
As you walk along Hollenbeck Avenue, please take a moment to make your acquaintances to the young American linden, planted only yesterday near the corner of Sumner Street.
Be sure to greet the pin oak, maples and ginkgos, too - and curb those pets! as these generous beings will need all our loving care to grow strong and shade the next generations of Hillites and others who share our streets. On Castle Hill Avenue, two adorable new sugar maples planted last week, will also appreciate a tip of your hat and our messages of good health and joy to pass along to the folks they will meet two hundred years from now. Young Ones - mark the passage of time as they grow along with you, note when they finally put out those acorns and enough leaves to rake! And let's not forget the brave young sentinels on Everett Street, across DuBois' Golden River, the sweet maples on South and Depot Streets in Housatonic, the sycamore on Taconic Avenue before the railroad bridge. Our older giants have new companions, and we are grateful.
The Tree Committee thanks all who voted at Town Meeting 2023 in favor of funding this effort. It was a vote for the beautification and welfare of our human and animal community - present and future. Generous tree donations by local nurseries, including Ward's, Windy Hill, and Whalen, have allowed us to fill in the funding gaps, with the assistance of the Dept. of Public Works, who have worked to get the trees in the ground. Thank you too, to community members who have joined our monthly meetings in support of our efforts.

I'll be keeping an eye out - haven't noticed much graffiti of late but I remember a bamboo forest in China with lots and lots of graffiti.

Isn't it wonderful?? I can't believe it's so close at hand. I'll be camping there whenever I can!
